This book is your game plan for success. I would gladly start a discussion on this and take advice. I was feeling SOL before this book in getting a good grasp on the dramatic unit – brick in the wall – that are scenes.

I understand from other reviews there exist an updated copy of this book with recent fiction excerpt examples. A must for every fiction writer. Hear ye, hear ye: The examples he gives are rather dry, but that’s okay.

Believe me, you won’t regret it. You’ll learn how to: The section on structure, however, leaves much to be desired.

This book takes a bottoms up approach, which really helped to fill in some of my knowledge gaps. In this case, I think a great deal of it will work for me.

I do a fair amount of contest judging and one of the critical flaws I see over and over again is that beginning writers don’t understand what a scene is, or how to write one that keeps the reader turning pages. Bickham talks about how to construct a beat within a scene, and ultimately how to create scenes that have good forward momentum. Elements of Fiction Writing. Dang, it’s been a long time since I read this, but it was one of the foundation block to my journey as an author. There’s not a whole lot that Bickham says here that you couldn’t get from just picking up any best-selling novel at random and studying the author’s use strcuture structure on your own.

I found it trying to be a little too prescriptive and formulaic for my tastes, and I think I would’ve had more confidence m.bicmham a reader if the analysis was applied to a classic at times rather than a piece author’s unpublished work.
